The girls soccer season got off to a great start last August. They tried out new formations on both offense and defense from the get – go. The girls also were doing a fine job with a winning regular season record of 7-6-3. As senior night happened, the soccer season came to an end.

The team captains selected by head coach Mr. Joe DiLalla were seniors Hanna Zuzek (also the team’s leading scorer) and Regina Ziccardi, and junior captain, Jenna Curtis. The team was also led by a very talented group of non – captain seniors, including Melissa Kuchta and Ari Ljubi.

The team is also “young” with juniors Christina Praporost (starting goalie), Curtis, and Aiyana Welch-Muraski getting their varsity “feet wet” and doing a fine job.

The highlight of the season, no doubt, was an amazing victory versus state – ranked Hawken. The last time the girls defeated Hawken was five years ago in 2010. The first half went without a goal. The second half was equally tough until Jenna Curtis scored an amazing goal. The girls held off the Hawken’s offense from scoring the rest of the game. It was (easily) the best game the girls played this year and their coach and fans were really proud of them. Senior Melissa Kuchta said, “It was great to see all of our hard-work paying off and seeing the team reach its full potential!”

The girls also had an amazing effort on October 15th. They were down 0 – 3 at the half but came back in the second half to tie the game, 4 – 4. Junior Katie Hatzidakis said, “It was interesting. It was really touching and sentimental to see the relationship all the girls and coach developed with each other.”

The season officially ended in the district semi – finals when the team was defeated by Chagrin Falls, 2- 0. Prior to that, the girls won a first round playoff game versus Geneva 2 – 1. The final record stands at 8 – 7 – 3 and the books are closed on a successful season.

Coach DiLalla summed it up by saying, “I was excited this year to coach the team because I knew they would do great things…and they did not disappoint.”
