Kami Diving at State

The West G. swimmers and divers closed their season with a strong finish this year. Prior to the post season, however, the swimmers had an average showing, as the boys finished with a  3 – 7 dual meet record, while the girls finished at 5 – 6. Success began at Hawken in the C.V.C. swimming and diving championship where Ryan Gleske set a new school record of 1:03:32 in the breastroke and Kami Goodrick set a school diving record of 402.90 points.

The competitive streak continued at districts where 13 athletes of the 23 on the team qualified to compete. While they did not get through to state, our relay qualifiers were Mitchell Owens, Chase Waterman, Samuel Wilson, Katherine Kulp, Jordyn Lees, Kayleigh Spotts, and Austin Maguire. Individual swimmers who did not qualify to state but performed well at district included Tucker Harvey and Grace Platek.

Jay Bryson also finished 7th in the boys diving competition, just one spot away from qualifying for the state meet.

This led to the state competition where Kirstin Boni, competing in her first state event, finished in 9th place in the breaststroke. Gleske, who competed in the state meet all four years, placed 7th in both the IM and the breaststroke. Goodrick finished with a 2nd place medal in diving, the highest finish ever for a West G. diver. What makes this so much more impressive is that this is her first year as a diver.

Along with these accomplishments, the efforts of the entire team shined through at the banquet where Gleske and Boni were awarded the title of team MVP’s. The accolades continued with Austin Maguire (Most Improved), Tori Finnick and Jordyn Lees (Most Improved), Rachyl Anderson (Spirit Award), Kami Goodrick (Rookie of the Year), Tucker Harvey (Coach’s Award), and Katherine Kulp and Grace Platek (Coach’s Award).

Throughout the season, the entire team of individual swimmers, relay teams, and divers put forth outstanding effort, proving they have what it takes to be the best and represent West G.
