The girls basketball team here at West G. finished up the 2015 season versus Jefferson by losing in the sectional round of the OHSAA playoffs. This left their final record for the season at 5-16.  Head coach Ms. Cheryl Rye noted, “From a record standpoint it was somewhat a disappointing season, especially the way it ended with a difficult tournament loss. [But] we have a tremendous group of young ladies in our program, [and] it’s time that their hard work translates into wins on the court.”

Lead by team captains Hanna Zuzek and Christina Rakich, the girls pulled out more wins this season than last season, showing significant improvement. “I’m proud of the team for winning more games than the previous year,” says Hanna Zuzek, co-captain and varsity starter, “We left it all out on the court.”

The team played very well at times as a unit and they were recognized with several individual awards, also. Junior Jenna Kijauskas was awarded CVC 1st team and all – Northeast Ohio Lakes District Honorable Mention. Senior Christina Rakich was awarded all – CVC 2nd team. Hanna Zuzek was awarded the 1st Team all – Geauga County. She and Lindsey Stanforth both received the CVC Honorable Mention, as well. Juniors award certificates were presented to Melissa Kutcha, Regina Ziccardi, Hanna Zuzek and Jenna Kijauskas. Senior award Certificates were given to Christina Rakich, Joelle Baliker and Marissa Dalessandro.

“We planned to work hard to execute the game and win more games since we are all so close and hard working,” said Zuzek. Coach Rye echoed those sentiments, adding, “We continued to play with grit and determination throughout the year.”

In closing, Coach Rye said, “Looking to next season, although the loss of our three seniors (Christina, Joelle and Marissa) will be hard to replace, we will look to be a team of action…to be a reflection of what we say by winning games.”
