Advisor Note: Due to an error (by the advisor) this story did not run in the fall. We regret the delay.

It seems that at the time the leaves were changing colors and the air was becoming brisk, everyone’s attention was on “The Boys of Fall” who play every Friday night under the lights. What some people fail to recall is that there is another group, the other “Boys of Fall:” the boys soccer team.

The West Geauga boys soccer junior varsity and varsity teams, coached by Mr. Eugene Iacona and Mr. Brian Murphy, are the boys of fall who don’t get all of the attention. Working hard since the summer months of June and July, and training on the “Loop” for fitness, the boys had a decent season with many close games.

The J.V. team was under the leadership of captains Thomas Magalski, Xavier Zup, and Spencer Smith this year and worked tirelessly as a team every game to get the win. And they did win games with 14 new faces on the team this year.

The varsity team worked exceptionally hard this year under the influence of their captains, Jake Clark, Ryan Gleske, and Brenden Judson. From intense victories, to three season-ending injuries, the boys soccer team seemed to have been through it all together. The boys are exceptionally grateful for the addition of the turf field this year. Looking back on their season, the coaches described the team’s progression as, “The team has grown in a lot of ways: technically, physically, and maturity wise.”

Individuals who succeeded on the field included all – CVC players Jake Clark (1st Team), Ryan Gleske (2nd Team) and Miles Canton & Kevin Bonfich (Honorable Mention). The offensive and defensive players of the year were Clark & Gleske (offense) and Ben Hester (defense). The Pat Brady Memorial team award went to Chris Stone.

As their regular season came to a close, the team set their sights on playoffs. The boys were seeded number five and played the number four seed, Lake Catholic. They suffered a heart breaking 2-1 loss.

Despite their brief time in the playoffs, these boys of fall worked hard and finished the season with a record of 5-9-2.

The team would like to give recognition to this year’s seniors, Brenden Judson, Mitch Hodgins, Ryan Gleske, Chris Stone, Pat Drockton, Jake Clark, Steve Kligman, Kevin Bonfich, and Tyler Brininger for all of their years of dedication to the program. Thanks, men !
