Gymnasts Begin 2015 Campaign

As the 2015 gymnastics season here at West Geauga High School begins, the girls have many ambitious goals. With two returning senior captains, Katina Demarchi and Elise Sanelli, along with 11 returning competitors, including Caroline Wolfhope, who qualified to state on bars in 2014, the season is gearing up to be a great one.

Their goals for the season include winning the West G. Open (which involves CVC teams) and to qualify as a team to the district meet. Their first meet was December 10th and the season continues through mid-March. “I’m looking forward to the talent ! Many of these girls come from club gyms and train year round. They are excellent athletes and will be fun to watch,” said head coach Mrs. Gina Javorek, a former West Geauga Gymnastics competitor.

One of the unique things about West Geauga’s gymnastic program is that we are a “hub” for local schools that sponsor the sport. Up to as many as 10 schools regularly meet at West Geauga to train and practice.

To date, the team has had two meets, both of which went pretty well in terms of team unity. “I love that we always cheer each other on at meets and motivate each other to do our skills.” said junior Kendall Lyman.

In addition to Wolfhope, Coach Gastaldo is looking to some of the younger gymnasts to “step up” and do well. “For the first time in a while, we have a bunch of athletes who are good enough to qualify to the state meet. We’re excited about that.”

We look forward to a season full of surprises and we wish the girls the best of luck !
