The West Geauga Lady Wolverines basketball season came to a bittersweet end in a district semifinal bout versus the Marlington Dukes in late February, sending a strong veteran core of graduates off to college with plenty to be proud of.

The Lady Wolverines’ season was a fruitful journey, picking up 14 wins over the campaign, a third-place finish in the conference, and numerous individual accolades for many players on the team. In the sectional – district tournament, the girls notched wins over Kenston (50 – 39) and then Youngstown East (51 – 34) before bowing out to Marlington.

Second-year head coach and athletic director Mr. Brandon Stewart remarked on the team’s success over the season after the loss in the Chesterland News with an optimistic and grateful tone. “Alexa, you can’t really say enough about her,”  referring to (and thanking) senior Alexa Hocevar for her record-setting career with the Lady Wolverines. Hocevar, a Division 1 commit to Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, reached 1000 career points in her senior season (becoming only the 2nd lady Wolverine to accomplish that milestone) and put up almost 17 points per game throughout the campaign.

Hocevar wasn’t working alone, though, and had seniors Haley Ottman, Ashlyn Drayer, Grace Laster and junior Maggie Furst at her side leading the charge.

Ottman ran the distribution of almost every possession, and, as an assist machine and being half of a deep threat duo along with Drayer, Ottman certainly had a season to remember. Furst consistently dominated the boards every night with almost 12 rebounds per game to go along with her 16 points per game.

Following the season, several player were honored with all – league honors. Congratulations to all-CVC Chagrin Division players, Alexa Hocevar and Maggie Furst, First Team, Haley Ottman and senior Grace Laster, Second Team and Honorable Mention Ashlyn Drayer and Courtney Whiting.

The West Geauga Girls basketball team was well represented on the 2022-23 OPSWA Northeast all-District team as well. Alexa Hocevar was named First Team All-District, while Maggie Furst picked up second team honors. Haley Ottman was an Honorable Mention selection.

In addition to those, Furst received all – Ohio honorable mention and Hocevar scored all – Ohio special mention.
