Into the Deep

Swimmers Taking the Plunge

Boni and Gleske

This year’s swimming and diving teams have been doing wonderfully ! 2014 has been one of the best seasons for the girls team in the program’s history. The girls have substantial depth and up until their “triple loss” versus Padua, Beaumont, and St. Joe’s, the team had a winning season going. Their meet record now stands at 3-5. The boys have worked just as hard, but their record is 1 – 6 at present.

The Elyria Catholic Pentathlon was held on 1/4/14.  In this meet each contestant swims a 50 yard backstroke, a butterfly, a breaststroke, and a freestyle.  Points are awarded for the top 20 finishers in each event.  The top 12 then compete in a 100 yard individual medley (swimming 25 yards of each of the four strokes).

Kirstin Boni finished 3rd in the field of 168 females and Ryan Gleske finished 4th among 121 males.  The girls team finished 5th of the 12 teams competing and the boys team ended up 7th of 9.

One special aspect of the season is the “Lost a Minute” award. By tracking time improvements throughout the year, as well as through the course of multiple seasons on the team, once a swimmer has improved his/her time by more than 60 seconds, s/he is inducted into the “Lost a Minute” Club and awarded a t-shirt. Sophomore Mitchell Owens did it in one meet, improving his 500 yard freestyle time by more than 60 seconds in the third meet of the season at Independence. Courtney Kirchner and Jordyn Lees have both accomplished this over the course of this season as well. Courtney lost 60.42 seconds of time and Jordyn, 63.75.  This is the second season in a row Jordyn has achieved this honor, working diligently through some injuries.

Congratulations to the team on an awesome season. Keep up the good work !
