Wolverine Wrestlers Embracing the Grind

The wrestling team is back for the 2013-2014 season.  The season started in 2013 with 28 guys out for the team, with a nice variety of old faces and new faces.  As the 2014 part of the campaign arrives, 18 wrestlers are still here. The more experienced ones are trying to teach the new faces just what West Geauga Wrestling is all about.

Among those returning, four stand out.  Seniors Robbie Alcorn, David Eippert and Charlie Drain, and junior AJ Vetturini, are the leaders of the team and all are returning district qualifiers.  Head coach Mr. Joe Marino expects all of them to challenge for state tournament bids.  “We were on a nice run where in 12 of the last 13 years we had at least one state qualifier.  We’ve not had one the past two years and we’d like to get back to where we know we can be.”  With those four returning qualifiers, that goal is definitely within reach.

Unfortunately, in the early part of the season, the boys were plagued with injuries.  Vetturini, Alcorn and Eippert all missed at least one month.

To date, sophomore Joe Fornaro, is leading the “record race” at 27-7. Alcorn clocks in at 13 – 7; Eippert is 7-1 and Drain is 20 – 12.  In tournaments, David finished 1st at Aurora and 2nd at Liberty; Joe finished 5th at Aurora, 2nd at Liberty and Perry and 5th at Kenston. Charlie finished 4th at Aurora, 3rd third at Liberty and 2nd at Perry. Vetturini returned to action just last week and now stands at 4 – 2 for his season.

The team is currently 7 – 7 in dual meets and is training for the CVC as well as post – season tournaments. Other regular varsity starters include freshman Evan Vetturini (132), sophomores Ashton Peck (106) and Michael Steigerwald (126) and junior Chris Chambers (120).
