Many people who walk these very halls at West Geauga are masking talents that are awe-worthy. One such person is our very own senior, Lilly Faulk. Lilly has been involved in choir since freshman year and has recently been accepted into the prestigious 2014 Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) all-State Choir. Mr. Paul Stewart, WGHS choir director, urged her to audition.

Each year the OMEA organizes the all-State Choir, an event where music teachers from across the state of Ohio come together to further develop their music teaching skills through workshops and clinics. They do so by training and featuring the very best music students the state has to offer in concerts and various other activities.

In order to qualify, participants must record an audition. The auditions must include a prepared solo, showcasing various vocal ranges. Almost 900 students from across Ohio sent in audition recordings. Of those 900, only 159 were selected.  To demonstrate her range, tone, flexibility, intonation, and musicality, Lilly sent in her recording and ended up being 1 of 41 altos chosen to participate in this year’s ensemble. This is evidently not an easy task, and in doing so, Lilly has created a distinguished name for herself.

In preparation for the ensemble, Lilly will have to attend two regional rehearsals at Baldwin Wallace College in October. In addition to these rehearsals, she will travel to Columbus for three days of rehearsals with the full choir.  In Columbus, the director will be culminating a performance of all the participants chosen for thousands of people at the 2014 OMEA Professional Development Conference.

The performance will be professionally recorded and will eventually be available for purchase on iTunes. When asked what she is most excited about Lilly said, “I am most exited for being in the choir and hearing us as a whole. Even if it’s just warming up, it’s so awesome being with a big group of people who actually want to be there and singing fun songs.”

She expressed her thanks to Mr. Stewart for the time he has spent, preparing her for the audition, by providing her with voice lessons and urging her to audition.

We wish her luck and continue to provide her unconditional support during this exciting time.
