Like most springtimes in Ohio, just over one week ago, it was 40 degrees and snowing. This could mean that spring sports were likely cancelled. A lot of things are at the mercy of the weather, but sports are the one of the things most people care about when weather impedes. It’s actually exciting (and at times downright surprising) in Northeast Ohio when a spring sports game doesn’t become cancelled and the players actually get to compete.

When that sport is baseball, Mr. Guy McIntyre is the head coach, and high school teacher, Mr. Dale Smith, is the assistant coach. There are currently 14 players on the varsity team, 13 on the JV team, and 12 on the freshman team.

The varsity baseball team is currently 5 – 12 in the won – loss column, with the biggest win coming versus Beachwood to date and Lakeside being a close second.

It’s been unusually hard to prepare for games this season with all the COVID concerns, precautions and protocols, but the players are very competitive and are still improving. No matter what they have to endure, it’s better than last season when the entire year was cancelled. Despite losing the entire 2020 season, the team is very close, personally, and sportsmanship is a very important factor with the players. As such, they met for open field pickup games in the fall, so they were not totally without practice.

The goal for this season is to stay competitive in CVC and to do that the team plans to keep working hard and playing together.

Lino Valletta, a senior on the baseball team who will continue his career at Baldwin Wallace next year, said that, “Baseball is one of the toughest games when it comes to dealing with failure. The team has had many failures and some success.” He went on to explain that for them to have more success, the team needs to accept that they can only control so much, and they need to focus on the future instead of the past.

The senior celebration for the baseball team is Monday, May 10th versus Orange.
