GOOOOOAL! Watch out ! The girls soccer team looked better and better over the course of the season. The team was led by head coach, Mrs. Kori (Chapic) Jesenovec, and assistant Mr. Dan Cappelucci, both of whom are in year two of their coaching assignment here at West Geauga. The girls were set to make improvements after finishing 7-10-2 season last year. This year’s team had 24 girls on the squad. 10 were deemed “varsity only,” 4 were “JV only,” and the “Bubble Squad,” 10 girls who logged both junior varsity and varsity minutes. There seniors on the team this year included Lucia Carpinelli, Emily Cochran, Jenna Hoeh, Lexy Marin, and Sarah Grinstead.

To prepare for the year, the team had lots of pre-season training with workouts, weight lifting, and early morning practices where, according to Coach Jesenovec, “The girls put [in] their maximum effort and determination. Coach Jesenovec also said, “The entire girls soccer program is constantly improving and setting newer and higher standards each game. The focus of individual skill improvement and team tactical awareness and decision making improved all season long and will only continue to improve as the girls set their expectations higher and higher.” The higher expectations became a reality, as the season ended positively, finishing with a 9-5-3 record.

In addition to the strong senior leadership, the coaches also noted freshman Rae Ehrbar, sophomores Nicola Ehrbar, Bailey Zanella, and Aubrey Zanella, and juniors Madison Allegretti and Emily Allegretti as stand-out contributors. Emily commented on her leadership, saying, “The team was really close this year, and everyone knew each other. There was a lot of team bonding, so this helped us do well on the field.”

On senior night at home versus Chagrin Falls the game ended tied, 1-1. Coach Jesenovec summed up the season by saying, “The camaraderie of the team has been fantastic and the attitudes have been positive in pushing each other towards their potentials.”

Come see the girls play at Howell Field next summer/fall. Good luck to the girls next season!
