One of West Geauga’s most astonishing and invigorating groups is the marching band. Led by teachers Mr. Jason Branch and Ms. Taylor Uveges, the 2018 marching band consists of 144 proud members. The band has grown, when compared to 2017, when the roster topped out at 130 members.

The band schedule includes the first 10 weeks into the school year during football season, where they perform at Friday night halftimes. They also appear at the Geauga County Fair Band-o-Rama, do a live TV performance on Fox 8 during the Kicking it with Kenny morning show segment, the Lakewood Band Festival, the Buckeye Invitational, and, this year, the band performed at Ohio State University.

The band is a huge part of the Friday Night Lights atmosphere, and Mr. Branch is very happy with all of his students’ hard work and dedication. Mr. Branch said, “The dedication displayed by the students is admirable, and I look forward to instructing the group on a daily basis. The students are amazing!”

Their hard work also takes lots of dedication. The band rehearses 8th Period in the band room, daily, and Tuesday/Wednesday/ Thursday after school on the turf or Lion’s field (whichever is available).

They have specific “times” and “things” to do during performances, also. “The WGMB has a set of standard tunes to play for offense/defense, and many of the students get really into the football games. Some don’t watch carefully. “It is hard to see from where we are sitting, but the directors and the drumline are watching every play carefully,” Branch added.

Mr. Branch says that even though the athletic teams might have the spotlight, the band also works hard. Senior Kevin Petransky noted, “My favorite memory of band is when we got a standing ovation from TBDBITL (the Ohio State band) at the skull session after we played “Learn to Fly.”

The band is an enjoyable, awesome, and great addition to Friday nights. Come out to the football games on Friday nights to support your football team and marching band!
