2018 Season Continues

The 2018 West Geauga girls volleyball team has been working hard since school let out last June. “We went two hours a day with conditioning and open gym four to five days a week all summer. We had an awesome turnout every day and we all worked hard together as one from the freshman right up to the seniors,” said head coach Ms. Amber Baker.

This is Baker’s fourth year as a West G volleyball coach and third year in charge of the varsity.  Assistant coaches Mrs. Stephanie Rowen, high school math teacher Ms. Kelsey Fladda and former varsity player Lexi Spies round out the staff.

So far the team is 3 – 5 this season. “We have a long way to go, and the only thing that will hold us back is our own mental toughness,” Baker said. “We have to keep our foot on the gas and really mow some of these teams over. Show no mercy!”  Coach also added that one goal for the team is to end up in the tournament finals, but also to be seeded in the upper tier, record – wise, in the CVC. If this is accomplished, Baker feels the team will have started to reach its potential.

There are 9 seniors that include Julia DeGaetano, Emily Donato, Paige Miller, Anna Jadrych, Riley Elliott, Alyssa Ranallo, Cameron Britt, Michele Trexler, and McKenna Clayman.  Rounding out the varsity team is junior middle Sarah Koach and sophomores Lauren Lance and Brooke Henriksen.

According to Donato, “The mental aspect of our game is an advantage because that’s how we win.”

This year is a no nonsense year for the team. “If you want to be on the court, you have to be a good teammate and have the fight in you to win games. We are capable of so much with this group of athletes; come check us out,” said Coach Baker.
