The West Geauga girls varsity soccer team ended the 2017 season with a record of 3-8-2 (win-loss-tie). The team was led this year by new head coach, Ms. Kori Chapic, who said, “This season was one for building and learning about the game and for me to be able to learn about my players and what drives them the most.” Earning the trust of the players was Coach Chapic’s first priority. Speaking of trust, the players should trust what Coach Chapic is telling them.

A Class of 2010 West Geauga graduate, Coach Chapic is one of the most decorated athletes in West Geauga history. She was a part of 3 CVC team championships and was “all – Ohio” three times. A four – year letter winner, Chapic was also a full scholarship athlete at Penn State. In addition, she also was a 2x “all Midwest Region” player while in high school.

The varsity soccer team had 5 seniors, including Morgan Brown, Kayla DiLalla, Gabby Del Valle, Lauren Madden, and Bethany Heffron. The captains of the team were Morgan (midfield), Kayla (midfield), Gabby (defense), Lauren (defense), and Jenna Hoeh (midfield/foward). Morgan Brown said, “My favorite part about this season was how close all the girls on the team were and how fun it was to work with them.”

Coach Chapic’s goals for the season were to, “…foster growth, learn, strength, collaborate, and build confidence for independent women, through playing the beautiful game.” The girls devoted much of their time to achieve these goals. To prepare for the season, they participated in fitness testing and two-a-days. At each and every practice, they worked their hardest to improve their skills. The girls’ speed on the field gave them a boost over the competition, which was improved drastically over time with hard dedication and practice Coach Chapic said.

There are bittersweet feelings as the 2017 soccer season came to an end. At the award night, senior Gabby DelValle was named team MVP.

The girls varsity soccer team celebrated senior night on October 10th to say goodbye to the senior girls. Gabby summed up the season when she said, “We worked really and, despite the fact that our record was not that great, it was still a fun season.”
