Girls Tennis Captures Back – to – Back CVC Titles

The 2017 Lady Wolverine tennis team continues their season with an 11-1 record. The team is currently 6-0 in match play in the conference. The team’s main goal this season was to defend their 2016 CVC title and possibly do better than last year’s 14-4  record…MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ! The CVC tournament concluded and West Geauga has gone back – to – back ! The girls are the co-champions of the CVC Valley Division tournament, sharing the title with the Perry Pirates.

The team is coached by Mr. Joe DiMattia. Coach DiMattia was the JV coach for 6 years but took last season off. He was then was offered the varsity position. DiMattia is familiar last name for some, as his brother, Mario, was our athletic trainer for 10 years. Coach DiMattia’s favorite part about about coaching at West G is that all of the girls have a positive attitude and come to practice.

There are 14 tennis players, 7 on each team, varsity and JV. There is only 1 senior, Jennifer Schweiger, who plays doubles. The JV team is coached by Mr. Shaun Spence.  The three returning varsity letter winners are Mackenzie Hanford, Rachel Ange, and Lauren Ralph. They all started the season with a combined 11-0 record. Mackenzie faces the best player on the other team, in 1st singles, and is off to a great start. Rachel has been dominant on the court and has won over 120 games while losing only (roughly) 25 games. Lauren has truly showed herself in many matches and fought back after being behind.

Coach DiMattia explained why the season has been so rewarding by saying, “I really enjoy all of the girls on the team. They come to practice and matches ready to play and with a positive attitude. They are respectful on the court, as well as off the court, and are great people all-around.”
