West Geauga’s 2017 version of “Friday Night Football” started on August 25th when the team traveled to Chardon, a much awaited game for students at both schools. The hash tag “beatchardon” was posted all around social media. Despite fighting as hard as they could, Chardon won 42-14. The next game for the boys in blue was versus NDCL for the home opener at Howell Field. The Wolverines came up on the short end of a13-12 score after an intense game that went into double overtime. West Geauga’s varsity record this season is now 0-2. The Wolverines plan to keep pushing harder each game and not get discouraged, as they travel to Kenston this Friday to face the 2 – 0 Bombers.

With 21 seniors on the team, West Geauga has their strongest players on the field. The 2017 captains are seniors Michael Osters, Jax Shenkel, Frank DiPaola, Noah Ickes, and junior Matt Stewart. Shenkel is also the starting quarterback for the second season in a row.  After a change in head coaches and new offensive and defensive systems, the players had a chance to start fresh from last year’s season that ended with a record of 6-4.The combination of hard work, strong leadership, and the roaring of the fans helps push the Wolverines to play their hardest each game.

West Geauga football had to make a major adjustment when former head coach, Mr. Lou Cirino, moved to Strongsville. Mr. Brian Craemer stepped in to lead the team. Coach Cramer said, “To succeed, our team needs to work on camaraderie and being more detail oriented.” Camaraderie is a mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. The players have been devoting their off season time to lifting, conditioning, attending football camps, and practicing daily. Junior captain Matthew Stewart said, “All of us on the team are very close with each other, so we share that close bond that every great team needs.”
